Chapter Eleven

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was when I found out that we could audit a class at the culinary institute for free. And the instructor whose class I wanted to audit was Marva Williams’s class. Alexa and Geneva had said she had dated Fredrick, and we needed to know that for sure.

“I’m so excited. I’ve always wanted to take cooking classes.”

I turned to look at Lucy. “Really? I didn’t know that.”

She took a sip of her gingerbread latte. “That’s because you already know how to cook, and I don’t mind letting you do most of it. Or all of it. I mean, I can make simple dishes, but you make fancy dishes and wonderful baked goods, and I’ve always been jealous.”

This was something I didn’t know about Lucy. She had mentioned once that she wanted to learn more about baking, but jealousy? I was surprised. Sometimes you can know a person for years and not know as much about them as you thought.

“There’s nothing to be jealous of. Just because my grandmama taught me to cook and bake when I was still very young, doesn’t mean that I have more ability than you do. It just means that I have more experience. I love having you help me bake, and you can do it any time you want to.” Of course, I was no longer making desserts for Henry’s restaurant, so I didn’t have quite as many opportunities to bake as I once had, but I wasn’t going to hang up my apron anytime soon.

She nodded. “I would love that. But maybe I should take some classes here at the culinary institute? Just for fun?”

“It’s a great idea. You never know where it might lead you.” I parked my car.

She shook her head. “Oh no, I’m not going to get a job at a restaurant or anything like that. That’s a lot of hard work. Chicken noodle casserole is fine, but sometimes you just want to make something a little fancier.”

I took a sip of my eggnog latte. “I didn’t know Ed went in for fancy.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “Ed wouldn’t know fancy if it bit him on the nose.”

I chuckled. “You’ve got a point.” We got out of my car and headed to the culinary school. The class we were taking was more of a lecture than anything else. At the front of the classroom was a kitchen island with a sink and plenty of room to work. We found a seat near the front, and Lucy pulled a notebook out of her purse.

“I’m all set.”

“I see that.” I hadn’t even thought to bring a notebook, and I was wishing I had. This could be fun.

Marva looked to be in her early 40s, and she had a quick, practiced smile. She wore a stylish skirt set beneath a white coat today.

“Well, I see that we have some visitors,” she said, nodding in our direction and smiling.

We both nodded. “We’re looking forward to the class,” I said.
